England fans on the rampage? May. 15th, 2008 @ 06:38 pm

So can we now finally lay to rest the assumption that British football violence is exclusively English, and that the Scots are just a bunch of lovable cartoon characters?

Uefa final: Rangers fans’ rampage (Channel 4)

The sooner the collective governing bodies accept that the potential for violence and hooliganism is a consistent presence in several countries, the better it can be dealt with. Labelling one country as the “sick man of European football” makes for a convenient way of passing the buck, but allows the wider problem to fester and deteriorate. Just ask the Italians.

Blimey, it's been ages!
All work and little play makes 'Bert a dull poster. Not that posting regularly makes my 'blog any more interesting...

So apart from work, I managed to catch up with Mr & Mrs [info]piplog et al last w/end, drinking a moderate amount, having a beak at all their wedding photos, and munching a buttie or 3. We left early on the Sunday morning, and taking advantage of the weather, bought many things for a picnic, and spent the rest of the day in Walkden Gardens reading our books and eating...and eating... and eating.

Went to the optician's the other day, the good news being that my prescription is only a shade worse; but the bad news being that I need to wear my glasses more often. They make me feel sick when I'm in motion, so I'm not looking forward to that. Ugh. He says I'll get used to that after about a week tho. As work subsidise specs, I've ordered some smaller, lighter frames which are the bees knees. Only less knobbly. Should arrive in the next 10 days! Hurrah!

In book news: I've read Julian Clary's A Young Man's Passage, Alan C Martin's Tank Girl: Armadillo! and a Bushel of other Stories (just about as different to Haruki Murakami as it's possible to get!) and just started Neal Stephenson's The Confusion.

Had a surprise vehicle inspection today. I'm now very glad that yesterday I had a burning desire to put ol' Albatross through the carwash, hoover his innards, and check the oil, water and tyres - I passed with flying wotsits. Strange tho, eh?

Today, a certain Mr Branson is in the office, consequently everyone's gone quite mad. There's BBQs, bouncy castles and soggy sponge games in the car park, fancy dress, face painting, balloons, some PS2 action... all to show how much "fun" we have at work. Hmmm.

Just when Photoshop trickery memes seem to be getting a bit old hat, along comes a cool new idea that makes me alternately giggle and WTF?!…

ManBabies

As a concept on paper, “photos of babies and fathers with their heads swapped” doesn’t sound particularly interesting, but there’s some freaky stuff there.

What I did on Saturday... May. 12th, 2008 @ 10:06 am

And so it came to pass that self and [info]bardling piled into the trusty Vectra and hoofed it up the A14 and M6 to the Woodhouse Hotel on the outskirts of Coventry, for the Longdogs (Show of Hands fanclub) 10th birthday bash.

It was.. frankly, awesome. Loads of good music from such folks as Colvin Quarmby, Isambarde, PJ Wright, Nuada, Keith Donnelly...

And, hot foot from Exeter, Show of Hands themselves, with a /TWO HOUR/ set of songs mixed with answering questions from the audience.

Photos here.

Made it home at 3am. Don't care. :)

Becoming Abnormal May. 10th, 2008 @ 08:45 am

It’s my considered opinion that Bumblefoot’s album “Normal” is the finest rock album of the 21st century so far. Nick mentioned how he’s been playing the Alter Bridge album constantly, and that’s exactly how it was for me when “Normal” came out. I don’t think I listened to much else for a couple of weeks, and I still have regularly obsessive phases now, where nothing else quite hits the spot.

So… with the promise of a new album from the splendid Mr Thal this summer, I’m getting pretty excited, and the “Bumblefoot in the Studio” video diary on his Youtube channel is just SO tantalising!

Went for a gentle stroll around Greenway Bank Country Park on Saturday, and took my camera.  I seem to be rediscovering photography lately, and enjoying it.

Happy Star Wars day, dear flist!

Been doing many singings: Thursday, Friday and twice today. Was reading this morning too, in my best telephone voice.

The weather has rather scuppered any exciting plans we may have had for this w/end, so we've been reduced to playing "Guess Who"; having a foolish sock and knicker fight (I know I shall be finding balled socks in unusual places for weeks); general household potterings; and not much else. Drat.

The warmth of dampness of here does mean that the bulbs bunged in the front garden earlier in the year are poking their little green shooty bits upwards, making them a better target for cats and birds alike. Go Greenies!
